Achieved on the diamond throughout a magnificent 22-year career, definitive numbers such as “60” and “714” have long defined the career and mythical strength of Babe Ruth. Cosmetically, of course, there was “3,” which Ruth wore on his Yankee jerseys beginning in 1929. To this day, adoring fans can only imagine Ruth and his antics behind the scenes, dressing in the Yankee Stadium locker room, perhaps bellowing confidence before a game or raucously celebrating a triumph afterward. Present in that pinstriper sanctuary at the peak of Ruth’s amazing career, this locker room tag was affixed to Ruth’s locker. One of a scant few survivors from a clubhouse that was home to Ruth and the rest of the “Murderers Row” principals, this 2”-diameter bronze accessory features “BABE RUTH 3” engraved on one side and “YANKEE STADIUM LOCKER 3 – THE BRONX, NEW YORK” symmetrically engraved on the other side. Historical accounts have it that legendary Yankee equipment manager Pete Sheehy issued three of these to each Yankee player: one for the locker, one for an equipment bag and one for luggage. The sacred relic presents beautifully, with well-defined engravings that have withstood the wear inherent to everyday locker room use and subsequent aging.
