Representing the political right and the values of loyalty and friendship, this correspondence piece delivers a heartfelt message and a rare signature. Composed on White House stationery and dated “December 6, 1982,” the typewritten letter is signed by former President Ronald Reagan, who has simply penned his boyhood nickname, “Dutch.” Executed in black ink, Regan’s scripting projects (“9-10”) strength and punctuates a message conveying thanks for past support. The original mailing envelope accompanies. LOA from John Reznifoff, University Archives. This item has a reserve (estimated value $750-$1500). More on our website.
The letter reads (in full):
”Dear Hup:
I don’t quite know how to say this, but you should really not be concerned about any letters which come to you beginning “Dear Mrs. MacArthur” and ending “Ronald Reagan!” The letter you received, dated November 17, is a computer-printed letter from the Republican National Committee - - not from your old friend Dutch. Your generous support is what got you on that list in the first place, and I don’t want you to concern yourself about this type of solicitation. After all, if it wasn’t for the kindness you and Pete showed to a young man fresh out of college, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. The love and care you have always given are the most important contributions I have ever had.
Nancy and I hope that you had a happy Thanksgiving. With our warmest wishes,
Sincerely,
(signed) Dutch”
