The Black Wagner. Regarded as one of the greatest shortstops at any professional level in baseball history, John (Pop) Lloyd was so revered that even contemporary Honus Wagner purportedly stated “It’s an honor to be compared to him”. However, due to institutionalized racism of the era, Lloyd eked out a career by jumping from one squad to the next. “Wherever the money was, that’s where I was.” Graded 30 Good 2 by SGC, the powerful John (Pop) Lloyd is pictured with the Habana Club of Cuba on this coveted 1923-24 Billiken issue. Undoubtedly one of the top Negro League cards found in the hobby, this 1977 Hall of Famer is destined to be an instant cornerstone.

Only twelve similar copies have been judged by SGC. This particular specimen has been nestled in an advanced collection for nearly two decades. Only five National Baseball Hall of Famers are found in acclaimed Latin American issue which has witnessed a surge in interest from hobbyists and historians alike. The steady slugger is crispy portrayed against a period ballpark setting. Moderate surface creasing is offset by the clear imagery, inoffensive corner and edge wear along with a clean Spanish text advertising back. Only a handful of similar copies have been offered for public sale over the past decades, proving this Lloyd to be an essential acquisition for the serious collector. This item has a reserve. Estimate ($5000-$7000+)
