Born in 1874, Honus Wagner was still serving as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates at the ripe old age of 76 when he signed the offered government postcard in 1950. Wagner (d.1955) fulfilled an autograph request from a Birmingham, Michigan, fan on the back of this GPC, which is postmark-dated 3/23/50 on the pre-stamped side. While traces of the Carnegie, PA. post office cancellation stamp have bled through to the signed side of the card, Wagner’s firm (“9.5”) black ink, steel-tip fountain pen signature is not diminished.
