One of baseball’s greatest hitters hits the auction block with this Rogers Hornsby-signed 1951 government postcard. Despite a bit of minor ink migration, Hornsby’s steel-tip fountain pen signature presents as a highly pleasing (“9”) strength example. A Palms Springs, California postmark on the pre-paid stamp side of this vintage card, is dated 3/6/51. At the time, Hornsby was just about to start a campaign as skipper of the Seattle Rainiers that ended with the 1951 Pacific League pennant. A baseball lifer if there ever was one, Hornsby was involved with the game from his early childhood until his death on 1/5/63, with his final MLB position being that of a coach for the 1962 New York Mets team. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $250.
