Revel in a novel tradition with this 19th Century silver trophy ball. Professional baseball at the highest level was well established by the 1880s, with the National League and the American Association fielding Major League teams. What truly made baseball the national pastime was the proliferation of local leagues across the land. Perhaps the best reminders of these grassroots baseball organizations were the trophy balls issued to commemorate big games. Today, these late-1800s awards are great historic treasures.
Grace your collection with this fantastic 1881 sterling silver trophy ball. Sized a bit larger than a standard modern baseball, this precious metal orb has a circumference of 9-1/2” and a weight of 146.9 grams, equal to a little more than 5 ounces. Engraving reads in full “July 16th, 1881, L & T B.B.C. 31, J. Mc & C B.B.C. 9.” Stitching is also appropriately etched into the surface, leaving no doubt this is a baseball trophy. The surface is heavily toned, to a deep, rich shade of platinum, and there are three small dents, including one with a minute puncture. Though one dent at top comes very close, the engraved lettering in unaffected. Overall, this ancient trophy ball presents magnificently, with tremendous period authenticity.
