Dealt to the Washington Senators immediately following their last-ever World Series appearance, outfielder Johnny Stone spent the last five seasons of his 11-year career with also-ran rosters, a fact that helped overshadow his remarkable hitting exploits. Over his last four full seasons in D.C., Stone posted batting averages of .315, .314, .341 and .330 before contracting tuberculosis and retiring at the age of 32. In recognition of their stricken hero, the Senators held “Johnny Stone Day” on September 17, 1939. This program was issued that afternoon at Griffith Stadium with proceeds going to Stone. The four-page guide features black-and-white photos of Stone on the front and back covers, as well as biographical text on the back cover. The center pages display lightly marked scoring grids with pre-printed lineups. This scarce survivor presents nicely with covers/pages intact with moderate folding/fraying and a cover stain. Low number #434 printed on back cover! Opening Bid $100.
