Upon his surrender at Corregidor in 1942 to minimize casualties, Lt. General Jonathan M. Wainwright IV became the highest ranking American prisoner of war. The Commander of Allied Forces in the Philippines suffered from malnutrition and mistreatment for three years while held in Japanese prison camps. Regarded as a hero, Wainwright received the Medal of Honor and was promoted to the four-star rank of General when the Japanese surrendered in 1945. Bring this historic Medal of Honor winner into your collecting fold with this signature cut. Adhered to a 9/27/44 Corregidor 3-cent stamp first day cover, this ("7") strength J.M. Wainwright autograph was granted sometime between his retirement in 1947 and his death in 1953, as evidenced by his inscription "General, USA (Retired)." Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $100.
