Launched in 1960, and merged into the NFL in 1970, the AFL had just a single decade to yield game-day souvenirs. Eight teams participated in the AFL’s 1960 inaugural season, meaning there were four games played every Sunday during a 14-game season, in front of crowds averaging 16,000 fans. That adds up to around 900,000 tickets sold during the AFL’s first season of play. Judging from what’s currently available, relatively few of those 900K ticket stubs have survived. What happened to the unused tickets? Well, we can’t speak for most of the few that didn’t get destroyed, or were sent to a landfill, but we can tell you about this one from the 10/16/60 Buffalo Bills game, which is presented here in a PSA holder with a favorable grade (NM 7). This handsome full ticket is from the Bills third ever home game, when they took on the New York Titans at War Memorial Stadium, in front of a crowd of 14,988 fans. This near mint designation, makes this bold, clean ticket “1 of 1” at this level on PSA’s Pop Report, with just 1 graded higher.

By contrast, a modern NFL team plays 8 or 9 home games in front of 60,000+ rabid fans at each game, which is a moot point really, as all you get nowadays are electronic tickets at most major sporting events. With actual physical paper tickets quickly becoming a thing of the past, surviving examples are destined for serious escalations in value, likely sooner rather than later.

Opening Bid $250.
