Brawny “Boog” Powell was just what the doctor ordered when the Baltimore Orioles needed a 3-run homer. From the earliest phase of Powell’s MLB career, comes this autographed 1961-1964 game-used bat. This sixty-year old gamer is a Louisville Slugger Powell signature model, with a facsimile signature burned into the barrel. Powell has positioned a flamboyant autograph (“8”) between the factory label, and the facsimile signature. Tremendous game use is evident up and down this un-cracked bat, including contact marks, baseball ink transfers, stitch impressions, bat rack streaks, pine tar, and what appears to be cleat indentations. Powell has grooved the grain paths on the barrel, to enhance the hitting surface, and his uniform number “26” is written on the knob.

A provenance letter from a previous owner states the bat was given to his uncle by his friend, Orioles coach Gene Woodling. The uncle operated a local Baltimore service station, frequented by Orioles players, and his bat collection was kept in the family until early in the 21st Century. Woodling was hired by the Orioles for his coaching job in November of 1963, and remained with the club in that capacity through the 1967 season. Given the bat’s labeling period of 1961-1964, Woodling’s tenure as an O’s coach, and the typically short life of baseball bats, it’s likely Powell was swinging this stick during the 1964 season when he tallied a career high 39 home runs, though it’s certainly possible he used it earlier. LOA from John Taube-PSA/DNA for game use. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA for the autograph. Opening Bid $250.
