The Baltimore Orioles were flying high from 1966-1971 with 4 trips to the World Series and 2 World Championships. One of the men who gave the “Birds” wings was ace hurler Dave McNally, who went a remarkable 107-44 in the win-loss department during this six-year stretch. What matters here is McNally’s work at the plate from 1968-1970, which is the defined labeling period for the offered game-used bat. Throughout this three-season period, McNally had 340 plate appearances, with 285 at-bats, 33 hits (including 5 home runs), 22 sacrifice bunts, 1 sacrifice fly, 32 walks, and 138 strikeouts. He made outs by putting the ball in play 116 times and, of course, there was the occasional foul ball, so all this boils down to about 200 times that he made some type of contact with a bat in his hands. McNally probably didn’t require all that many bats in going about his batting business, and the mathematics coupled with the scarcity of available examples tells us the game-used Adirondack Big Stick model 182X bat offered here is an extremely rare example. This highly appealing gamer has McNally’s name on the barrel, and the model number is stamped into the knob. Excellent game use is evident including contact marks and bat rack streaks on the barrel and tape residue on the handle. Repair of a small chip on the knob has been reported although this condition is unobtrusive to display. Full LOA from John Taube-PSA/DNA. Opening Bid $300.
