The "Ace” of the “Black Sox” is played, with this Eddie Cicotte signed and inscribed index card. Though he was at an advanced age for a ballplayer, Cicotte was coming off the best years of his career, when he was banned from baseball for his alleged part in the 1919 World Series fix. Known as “Knuckles” for his command of the erratic knuckleball pitch, Cicotte has provided a straight to the plate (“9”) strength signature on the offered 3-1/4 x 5-1/2” index card, and he has included a personalization, and the inscription “White Sox”. Cicotte (d.1969) may well have been on the path to Cooperstown, and was still pitching well at the time of his ban, finishing the 1920 season with a 21-10 record, after going 29-7 in 1919. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $100.
