With five consecutive trips to the World Series from 1960-1964, the New York Yankees of that era were one of the greatest teams of all-time. Manning the crucial backstop position for this dynasty, was Elston Howard. The first black player to make the Yankees team, Howard came through big time when he took over full-time catching duties from Yogi Berra in 1960, with annual All-Star Game appearances, an AL MVP award in 1963, and for good measure, back-to-back Gold Gloves in 1963-1964. He was also a solid contributor to the Yankees offense, and his MVP win was the first by a black player in the American League.

Add this prominent Yankees star to your autograph collection, with these (2) Howard signed magazine page photos. Howard has applied (“8-9”) strength blue ballpoint autographs to both of these vintage photos, which were published during his active playing days in pinstripes. If the history isn’t enough to lure you in, Howard passed away in 1980 at the age of 51 due to heart failure, and his untimely demise those many years ago, puts him in the tougher autograph category. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.

Opening Bid $50.
