It was “The Year of the Tiger”, but in this pairing of 1968 World Series teams pennants, it’s the St. Louis Cardinals who come out on top. In 1968, Denny McLain went 31-6, and Willie Horton bashed 36 homers, to lead an all-around very talented Detroit Tigers team to triumph in the World Series. Opposing the Bengals in the ’68 Fall Classic, were the reigning champion Cardinals, who had defeated the Boston Red Sox in 1967. The (2) offered full-size pennants are both rare representatives of these winning teams, with:

St. Louis Cardinals with unique “Ole! Ole! El Cardos National League Champions” legend. The dancing bird located next to this proclamation is wearing a straw hat with “1967 World Series” on the front. A dated 1968 strip of tape between the graphics and the accent strip at left is covering white numbering, that is likely “1967”, suggesting this extremely rare pennant was repurposed for sale in 1968. Staining is noted along the wide end, and there’s a half-inch hole in the appliqué area, with adhesive residue and lettering surface loss radiating up from the hole. Otherwise, this fantastic piece presents attractive mid-level details.

Detroit Tigers with “American League Champions 1968” legend in a banner, over a baseball and a roaring Tiger. A 3” diameter “World Champs” cloth patch has been adhered at top left, and the “Detroit” lettering includes a tilted “o”. This design type positions as fairly scarce, though nowhere near as tough as the El Cardos herald. A small hole is noted adjacent to the black accent strip at the wide end, and tape covers a 9” span of the bottom edge, approaching the pointed end. With deference to these conditions, this pennant also presents as a mid-level piece. Opening Bid $100.
