American statesman William Howard Taft is the only man to have the distinction of serving as both President, and Chief Justice of the United States. Taft left office as President in 1913, and he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1921. During the years between holding these two top level positions, Taft was a professor at Yale, when he signed the offered check. Drawn on The Riggs National Bank of Washington DC, this antique check is dated 4/8/1919, Typical cancellation perforations are noted at center, and there are two pinholes at left from the removal of a staple. Taft's ("8-9") strength steel-tip fountain pen signature is not affected by these conditions, and the check remains remarkably crisp and clean. Taft made this check in the amount of $10.00, to "Cleveland H. Dodge, Treas.". Dodge was a prominent businessman and philanthropist, who aided a great many causes and institutions. It was as Treasurer of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, that Dodge received this check from Taft, evidenced by the organization's deposit stamp on the reverse.
