While considering this vintage “leatherhead” helmet, take a moment to reflect on the contributions of Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward, to the sporting world. In addition to founding the AAFC, Ward also created the MLB All-Star Game, boxing’s Golden Gloves organization, and the Chicago Charities College All-Star Game. It is the College game that concerns us here. Decorated with red and blue accent stripes over a silver field, the offered helmet was game-used by a College All-Star, during the early 1940s. Considerable signs of authentic wear/use are noted, and a Spalding factory logo is seen on the front. Began in 1934, this annual tradition pitted the NFL champions against a squad of college all-stars, to benefit local Chicago charities. Typically the games were played in the Summer, at Soldier Field, however the 1943 and 1944 editions were contested at Northwestern’s Dyche Stadium. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Opening Bid $200.
