Huggins and Scott Auctions takes great pleasure in presenting treasures from the estate of Arthur J. “Dutch” Bergman. A halfback for Notre Dame from 1915-1916, and 1919, Bergman went on to a lengthy career as a college football coach, along with shorter stints in basketball and baseball. Held by the Bergman family for more than one hundred years, these ancient relics make their way to the market for the first time in our current auction.
An outstanding college football squad of long ago is recalled, with this 1915 Notre Dame football team Type I photograph. Emerging from more than a century of safeguarding, this ancient photo captured a talented team that finished 7-1 in the 1915 season. Many of those pictured went on to play in the NFL, and its earliest iteration, the APFA, including Emmett Keefe, Ray Whipple, 1916 ND captain Stan Cofall, Frank Rydzewski, and others. Harry Baujan played in the NFL and coached for more than twenty years at Dayton, and Jimmy Phelan enjoyed a lengthy career as a coach in the NCAA, AAFC, and NFL. Also pictured are 1915 ND captain Freeman Fitzgerald, head coach Jesse Harper, and most importantly, second year assistant coach Knute Rockne. Bergman, who was the original owner of this photo, also enjoyed a long coaching career, including leading the Washington Redskins to the 1943 NFL championship game. Measuring 13-1/2 x 10-1/2", this crisp, oversized photo reports in solid Vg condition. LOA from Bergman's estate.
