Huggins and Scott Auctions takes great pleasure in presenting treasures from the estate of Arthur J. “Dutch” Bergman. A halfback for Notre Dame from 1915-1916, and 1919, Bergman went on to a lengthy career as a college football coach, along with shorter stints in basketball and baseball. Held by the Bergman family for more than one hundred years, these ancient relics make their way to the market for the first time in our current auction.
From this long-secluded collection, comes this oversized Type IV photo of the undefeated 1913 Notre Dame football team. Sized at 20x16, this heavy stock photo is a spectacular presentation in solid Vg+ condition. Bergman’s Notre Dame teammate, quarterback Jimmy Phelan (d.1974), has signed on the border at right, with the personalization “To my friend “Dutch” Bergman, From Jimmy Phelan”, and he has included the inscription “1917, ND”, indicating the year of his graduating class. Seen at center of the middle row, is youthful team captain Knute Rockne, and coach Jesse Harper is spotted at the right end of the top row. Located on the back is a photographer’s credit stamp for Sirlin Studios of Sacramento. This photo is believed to be a c.1930s-1940s print, and though it is not as old as the other items from the Bergman collection, it has been with the family for many decades. Enjoy this fantastic opportunity to be the first to own this photo, outside of Bergman’s family. Comes with an LOA from the Bergman Estate for the photo provenance; and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA for the Phelan autograph. Opening Bid $150.
