The first decade of American League play, was a good one for Connie Mack and his Philadelphia Athletics. The “Tall Tactician” led his “White Elephant” squad to AL pennants in 1902, 1905, and 1910, and his capped his tenth season as the A’s manager, with a World Series win in 1910. The legendary 1910 A’s team is brought before you, with this oversized 12x17 team photo, double-matted to overall dimensions of 20-1/2 x 15-3/4”. Produced by the Burke & Atwell Studio of Chicago, this antique photo is copyright dated 1910 at bottom right, with the photographer’s credit. Though vertical surface cracks are spaced 2” apart across the photo, it remains a dynamic presentation, with distinct images and abundant gloss. Mack is positioned at center of a v-wedge, with twenty-three of his players arrayed in super-imposed style, against a packed grandstand. A long-ago owner has thoughtfully written the surnames of the players on their shoulders. Among those pictured, are the famed “$100,00 Infield” of McInnis, Collins, Barry, and Baker; ace hurlers Bender, Plank, Combs, and Morgan, and invaluable stars Oldring, Murphy, Hartsel, Davis, Lapp, and Strunk. Also pictured are Donohue, Atkins, Krause, Thomas, Livingston, Lord, Dygert, Derrick, and Houser. So talented was the core of this dynasty founding team, that they went on to win three more AL pennants, and two World Series championships during the period 1911-1914, before Mack broke up the unit with his first big fire sale in 1915.
