Explore the roots of the "Crimson Tide" football team, with this 1892-1893 University of Alabama sports medal lot of (3). Gridiron play first became a thing for Alabama in 1892, when the football squad took the field under the name the "Alabama Cadets". Led by head coach E.B. Beaumont, the inaugural four-game season began in November, 1892 and terminated with the first ever "Iron Bowl" in February, 1893.

The first man to score a touchdown for 'Bama is the focus of this offering. On 11/11/1892, Alabama running back David Allison Grayson found the end zone, for the proud University's first ever TD. More than a century later, Grayson's contributions to the first two seasons of Alabama football were recognized with election to the Huntsville-Madison County Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. A prominent attorney and local civic leader, Grayson was voted Alabama's best all-around athlete two years in a row, as evidenced by this group of antique brass sports medals. Long retained by family heirs, these gleaming treasures come forward in nicely preserved state, with distinct details.

Featured are: 1.) engraved on the front with "Presented by A.C.C., University of Alabama best all-around Athlete, April the twentieth, 1892" and on the back with "D.A. Grayson"; 2.) front "U of A 1893 Field Day Medal, Best All Around Athlete" and back "Presented by Alston and Maxwell"; 3.) front "U of A 1893 Hurdle Race".
