Les Mueller, anyone? Does that name ring a bell for Tigers history buffs out there? A hot pitching prospect out of the St. Louis area, Mueller debuted in Detroit on August 15, 1941, appeared in just 4 games, and then missed two seasons for WWII. But his claim to fame came upon his return in 1945, when he single-handedly pitched a record 19 2/3 innings (yes, you read that right) in a 24-inning stalemate—legendary in its time as the "long game." It was Mueller's final big-league campaign, and it brought him a World Series championship ring! Here, Commissioner Landis acknowledges Mueller's reassignment to the Tigers' Class A1 affiliate in Beaumont, TX, just prior to his military service. The 4/14/42 TLS to Detroit GM J.A. Zeller appears on official Commissioner's Office stationery (8-1/2" x 11", EX with corner staple) and features Landis' black fountain-pen "7-8" signature. The accompanying Landis studio portrait (10 x 13-5/8", NM image area, VG margins) is personalized to a club and has the second half of the Commissioner's signature noticeably light/faded. Both items have Full LOAs from JSA.
