Strapping righthander "Big Ed" Walsh flat out dominated American League hitters in the early 1900s, with the "spitball" being his weapon of choice. Incredibly the Chicago White Sox ace logged 464 innings in 1908, winning 40 games that season, while posting a miniscule 1.42 ERA. Known for regularly complying with mail requests for autographs, Walsh kept up the tradition right 'til the end. Here we have one of the final examples of him satisfying a fan, with this signed 1959 GPC. Applied in red ink with the proud inscription "White Sox", Walsh's signature shows ("9") strength against a clean, light-cream background. The date of Walsh's death is cited as 5/26/59, and this vintage postcard is postmarked dated "5/20/59", just days before he succumbed to illness. Also noted at the top of the postmark stamp is Walsh's final town of residence "Pompano Beach". While we may never know if this was indeed the last autograph provided by Walsh, it is a distinct possibility. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA with Authentic Auto designation.
