A charter member of the AFL, the Kansas City Chiefs franchise had its beginning as the Dallas Texans from 1960-1962, sharing space with the NFL's Cowboys at the Cotton Bowl. Though they won the AFL championship in 1962, team owner Lamar Hunt felt a new location would be better for fan base growth, so he moved his franchise to Kansas City and renamed the team the Chiefs. The change of scenery came with some hurdles, but by 1966 the Chiefs were running on all cylinders. They won a second franchise AFL championship in 1966 and a third in 1969. Then in accord with the AFL-NFL 1970 merger plan, they took on the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, where they notched an astounding 23-7 victory and in the process, cemented the AFL's claim of respectability that was forged the previous season by Joe Namath and the New York Jets in SB III.
