Picking up on legendary executive Lamar Hunt’s reference, this Super Bowl II pennant is an incredibly scarce and well-preserved survivor. Cited as “Extremely Rare” in Mike Egner’s 2013 Vintage Pennant Price Guide II, this full-size red felt banner was crafted for vendor sales at the January 14, 1968 world championship game between NFL champion Green Bay and upstart AFL representative Oakland. A ball-toting figure is displayed in fluorescent green and pink hues with “SUPER BOWL” in multi-colored characters. This is among the earliest “Super Bowl” souvenirs, as the game was officially titled the “AFL-NFL Championship” until the third installment, but was referred to by Hunt as the “Super Bowl” (a title which the media readily embraced). Appliqué identifiers are crack-free, colors are vibrant and the blue spine is intact. An absolute stunner!
