Pay homage to “the Mahatma” with this amazing antique photo. Visionary genius Branch Rickey’s career as an innovative executive vastly overshadowed his days as a player. Presented is a 4-3/4 x 9-1/2” original type 1 photo of Rickey taken during his 1907 stint with the New York Highlanders. Professional news service markings/notations indicate this incredibly rare relic also made its way into print c.1914, citing Rickey as the manager of the St. Louis Browns. Minor tape repair at top left does not hinder the appeal of this top tier collectible. More on our website.
The 1-1/2” tape repair reconnects the top left corner section of the field and does not affect the image area in any way. This professionally taken photograph could only have been taken in 1907, presumably for period publication. Obverse markings include a circle around the head, a circled note at top left which reads as “same size”, a cropping outline to the right of the glove hand, cropping lines to the left and right of the shins and partial outlining of the uniform. Otherwise the obverse display stunning original details including a very sharp player pose. Reverse side notations appear in two different hands as “Rickey, New York” and “Manager, St. Louis-Americans”, referring to Rickey as a 1907 Highlanders player and as the 1914-15 American League Browns manager respectively. The words “New York“ have lines drawn through them giving rise to the belief that this striking image saw double duty in print, both in 1907 and c.1914.
