A renaissance man if ever there was one, Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward excelled on the diamond, earned a degree at Columbia Law School and proceeded to form the first sports labor union and eventually, the upstart “Players League.” Portrayed during his Major League career, Montgomery is the noble subject of this 1890s cabinet photo. While the matting is home to incidental (and very minor) wear and rounded corners, the actual photo retains its gloss. The reverse of the matte has period penciled notations and is dated “1894.”
