While game footage from earlier baseball endeavors is rare, telling images captured by the eye of the camera provide lasting memories of heroes we only wish we could have seen. These (9) black-and-white news service photos range from 5-1/8 x 6-3/4 to 8-1/8 x 10. These are all Type I or Type II, with editorial markings, stampings and original caption sheets on some. Subjects include: Dickson, Mazeroski, Score, Shantz, (2) Snider (one with infant son), Ruth/Gehrig, Wynn/Lopez and a 1943 War Bond Game photo with (12) including W. Johnson and Ruth.

TYPE I PHOTOS

Murray Dickson a March 30, 1948 (March 31, 1948 publication date) original 5x7 black-and-white photo of Dickson after he became the first-ever pitcher to throw a no-hitter in spring training; “ACME NEWSPICTURES” stamping on reverse and original caption sheet adhered,

Bill Mazeroski a 1963-1964 original 7-1/2 x 10” black-and-white photo of Mazeroski in the Pirates clubhouse (likely in spring training, as Pagliaroni’s locker plate lists him as number “7,” which he never wore during the regular season); there are vintage editorial markings throughout.

Herb Score a 1955 original 7-1/8 x 9” black-and-white photo of the ill-fated southpaw; reverse is home to an “Associated Press” stamping and the original caption sheet is adhered.

Bobby Shantz a March 29, 1955 original 5-1/8 x 7” black-and-white photo of Shantz; “Associated Press” stamping on reverse and original caption sheet is adhered.

Duke Snider an 1953 original 7-3/4 x 7-1/4” black-and-white photo of Snider fixing a toy plane as his infant son, Kevin, looks on; editorial and grease pencil markings throughout.
Duke Snider a 1963 original 78-1/8 x 9” black-and-white photo of Snider on the scale (obscuring the “verdict” with his hands); reverse is home to “WIDE WORLD” stampings and there are editorial and grease pencil markings on the obverse.

Al Lopez/Early Wynn an original 1959 wire photo (7x7, black-and-white) of the White Sox skipper and his ace pitcher; there are editorial markings on the front and an “Associated Press Wirephoto” stamping on the reverse.

TYPE II PHOTOS

Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig an 8-1/8 x 10” black-and-white print (developed from the original negative) of the pair embracing on July 4, 1939 as Gehrig made his “Luckiest Man” speech. This was reportedly the first time the two spoke with each other since a falling out in 1934.

1943 War Bond Photo a first-generation 10x8 black-and-white photo of skipper Connie Mack, umpire Bill Klem and (10) diamond greats (including Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner) as they prepared for an exhibition at the Polo Grounds.
