The early NFL was not a sport for the weak hearted; it took strong men to absorb the punishment dished out on the gridiron every Saturday and Sunday. No pads, no helmets, and little or no protection over other important areas created a harsh environment for these men, who often played twice a week. That being said, the 1925 Pottsville Maroons have been in a debate over who was the actual 1925 NFL Champions for the past 83 years. The Maroons defeated the Chicago Cardinals, 21-7, in December of 1925, effectively winning the championship, but the Cardinals went on to schedule two more games against less than stellar opponents, increasing their winning percentage enough to win the title. With both teams claiming the crown, the controversy began, and finally Chicago decided not to accept the award, thus the 1925 championship was never officially awarded to anyone. Presented is a 45th anniversary players’ ring from 1971, given to those members of the 1925 Pottsville Maroons still alive at the time. The ring features a red stone in the center and World Champions, NFL 1925 surrounding the stone. The right side has Pottsville Maroons, 1925 engraved and the left side displays two small footballs and a cleat with NFL World Champs engraved on a banner. The ring is in incredible condition, grading (“9-10”), and is a remarkable piece of NFL history. The ring is accompanied by a unique golden boot chain and charm, noted as a replica of the actual boot that won the game for the Maroons.
