On August 16th, 1920, in the most unspeakable tragedy in MLB history, shortstop Ray Chapman was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays of the Yankees and died 12 hours later. He's the only player to die directly from an injury received during a Major League game. Mays was known to dirty the ball to make it harder to see. Chapman’s death led to the rule requiring umpires to replace the ball if it becomes dirty. It also led to a ban on spitballs after the 1920 season and eventually it helped justify the wearing of batting helmets.

These (2) Type 1 News Service photos have both been graded PSA Authentic.

The Carl Mays photo is from the New York Herald Service, circa 1910s, and measures 6x8.

The Ray Chapman photo is from the Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1918, and measures 5 ¼ x 8. Opening Bid $150.
