When the Baltimore Orioles junkyard dog of a manager, Earl Weaver, retired at the end of the 1982 season, his polar opposite Joe Altobelli took the driver’s seat. The O’s had a fantastic reaction to Altobelli’s benevolent nature, running up a 98-64 record in 1983, and finishing off the season by winning the World Series, easing their fans’ pain over losing Weaver.
From the Orioles last season as champions to date comes this Altobelli game-used road jersey. The accompanying LOA cites this Rawlings jersey as having been made for Altobelli after he was hired by the Orioles on 11/12/82, so he could wear it during off-season photo opportunities and also during their 1983 Spring Training. The Rawlings size “42” factory label is located on the interior of the left-front tail, with an adjacent “Set 1 1982” tag. Altobelli’s nameplate spans the customary position, across the top of the back, and his uniform number “26” is seen on the front and back. Orioles lettering traverses the right and left breast on the front, and orange, white, and black trim line the collar and sleeves. Overall wear is light, as can be expected of a jersey worn by a manager. Phil Wood LOA.
