The New York Yankees braintrust of 1929 is recalled with this original Associated Press news service photograph of Miller Huggins and Art Fletcher. After winning the World Series in 1927 and 1928, the Yankees were sitting on top of the baseball world in 1929. Sadly, the 1929 season ended on a down note, as Hall of Fame manager Huggins succumbed to illness on 9/25/29. Coach Fletcher took over as manager for the final 11 games of the season, the Yankees finished second to the up and coming Philadelphia Athletics, and thousands of fans mourned the loss of their 3X world champion manager at his Yankee Stadium viewing.

Sized at 8" x 6", this antique AP photo was captured during the Yankees Spring Training in St. Petersburg, Florida, on 3/8/29. Huggins and Fletcher are pictured sizing up their players from the right side of the infield, and the cocky figure with his hands on his hips over at the shortstop position could very well be Leo Durocher. Stamped on the reverse is an AP credit, and a typed blurb is attached at bottom, with the caption “Yankee Manager Looks Over His Boys.” Light traces of ink transfer are located on the sky area, in front of Fletcher's head, and a crease at the bottom left corner forces a (VG) designation for this otherwise crisp and attractive photo.

Opening Bid $50.
