Originating as a newspaper comic strip in 1917, "The Gumps" blossomed into multi-media stars, featured in two-reel comedy films, radio, and comic books. Gumps creator Sydney Smith was one of the guests when the offered page was signed by him and more than a dozen others. Taken from a guest book, the offered 8-1/2" x 10-3/4" sheet is hand-dated "Oct. 25, 1934," pre-dating Smith's 1935 demise by 360 days. Located at the bottom of the page, Smith's ("7.5") strength autograph is accompanied by a sketch of Gump family patriarch "Andy Gump" along with the word balloon "Oh Min!" Dated "Feb. 19, 1959," the opposite side of the page is also multi-signed, with the most prominent signer on this later-date side being combat pilot Greg "Pappy" Boyington, who attained ace fighter status during WWII. Boyington's wife Frances is also noted among the signers. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $50.
