Sure, it was a very dirty job, but Four-Star General William Westmoreland stepped up to serve as commander of the United States forces in Vietnam from 1964-1968. A dedicated career Army man, Westmoreland served from his days at West Point in the 1930s, through WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam, finally moving up to Chief of Staff from 1968-1972.
