Phillies fans know Gary Matthews as “Sarge.” He hit a key home run to help propel the Phillies into the 1983 World Series, and later was a Phillies broadcaster. The Phillies acquired him during spring training in 1981. This uniform was used in spring training until they could make a proper one for Opening Day. The shirt was originally issued to pitcher Scott Munninghoff, who only played for a very short time in the majors in 1980 with the Phillies. This 1980 Phillies home pinstripe jersey #34, size 42 by Wilson, reads “Munninghoff” on the inside collar. On the back is the #34, beneath “Matthews” in red block letters. The jersey was repurposed for Matthews in 1981 and is in excellent condition. Phil Wood has no doubt about this jersey and gives his usual thorough history in his Letter of Authenticity. Opening Bid $150.
