Every year ballplayers enjoy the “Rites of Spring” by getting in shape and honing their skills in bright sunshine, with high hopes for the coming season. Photo specialists enjoy a sunny ray from the distant past, with this 1940 Pittsburg Pirates Spring Training panorama. Forty-four members of the Pirates organization are lined-up shoulder to shoulder in this 37x8 photograph, which is professionally framed and matted to overall dimensions of 46-1/2 x 16-1/2”. Key figures are Hall of Famers Frankie Frisch (manager), Honus Wagner (coach), Paul Waner, Lloyd Waner, and “Arky” Vaughn. Others of note are “Spud” Davis, Elbie Fletcher, “Rip” Sewell, and team president William Benswanger. The subjects are identified with fountain pen notations of their names, either above or below their corresponding images. Printed in white lettering at bottom left, is the caption "1940 Pittsburgh Pirates, Spring Training, San Bernardino, Calif.", and a credit for photographer C.N. Jackson for Brewer Studios is printed at bottom right. Age-appropriate wear takes the form of creases and light soiling around the perimeter, however the fairly distinct player images are unaffected.
