When you have a team as bad as the 1940 Philadelphia Phillies, the only one thing you can seem to do right, is lose. The highest RBI total racked up by any position player on this woeful squad was 53, and four of the starters lost anywhere from 14 to 22 games. The result was a truly forgettable 50-103 record, good for a dead last finish in the National League, a distant 50 games back of first. Still, this ancient squad yielded a half dozen players and coaches whose autographs are gold for modern collectors. Dig deep for this 1940 Phillies period signed picture pack partial set of (25/35). Fairly valuable even without autographs, these crisp 6 x 8-3/4" photos take the field in a condition range of (VG to EX). The signatures are all pleasing examples ranging ("8" to "10") in potency, and nearly all are personalized to either "Red", or "Yah".

Highlights are: Cy Blanton (d.1945), Lloyd Brown (d.1974), Chuck Klein (HOF, d.1958), "Hans" Lobert (coach, d.1968), "Doc" Protho (manager, d.1971), and Johnny Rizzo (d.1977).

Balance are: Bill Atwood, Walter Beck, Bob Bragan, Kirby Higbe, Frank Hoerst, Si Johnson, Syl Johnson, Art Mahan, Joe Marty, Merrill May, Mel Mazzera, Walt Millies, Alex Monchak, Emmett Mueller, Hugh Mulcahy, Ike Pearson, "Ham" Schulte, Clyde Smoll, and Ben Warren.
