It was a short commute for coach Elston Howard to get to the 1977 MLB All-Star Game, as it was held at Yankee Stadium on 7/19/77. A 12X All-Star catcher during his playing days with the New York Yankees, Howard joined manager Billy Martin, honorary captain Joe DiMaggio, and All-Stars Willie Randolph, Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, “Sparky” Lyle, and Graig Nettles, in representing the Yankees at the 1977 Mid-Summer Classic. For his participation, Howard was presented with the offered participation award. This heavyweight memento is a 6” tall bowl, with a 7” diameter across the top. Measured as 1” thick, this bowl appears to be made of leaded glass, and it is accompanied by 10” diameter wood base, that sits 2” tall. The front of the bowl is etched with a dated “1977” American League logo, and the base is decorated with fifteen enamel on brass medallions, with one for the American League, and 14 for each of the League’s baseball clubs, including the 1977 expansion teams, the Seattle Mariners, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Four small chips are noted on the inner edge of the bowl’s rim at top, and the wood base shows general light to moderate wear, including a chip and adhesive residue on one of the octagonal corners. Comes with an LOA singed by Howard’s wife Arlene.
