While NFL skill position ball handlers get most of the glory, it’s the trench wars that typically decide the game. From the head of trench warrior Dexter Manley, comes this game-worn 1987 Washington Redskins helmet. Thanks in no small measure to Manley’s efforts, the ‘Skins were the ultimate victors in ’87, finishing with a crushing 42-10 defeat of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. A Second-Team All Pro in 1987, Manley recorded 8.5 sacks during the regular season, and 3 sacks in the postseason, including 1.5 sacks in the Super Bowl. The rugged defensive end could very well have been wearing this helmet, while going mano-a-mano with the Broncos offensive linemen during the title game. Marked with abundant signs of authentic game use, including nicks, scuffs, gouges, soiling, and bubbling of the classic Redskins logo decals, this vintage gamer bears several identifiers on the interior, with a Riddell model M155 factory label, a “7-1/8 – 7-3/4” size sticker, a Dymo label strip that reads “72 Manley”, and an NOCSAE Recertification sticker dated “1987”, over another sticker from a prior season, suggesting Manley may have employed this considerably worn helmet in more than one season. In addition to the wear detailed above, this helmet also shows extensive staining on the interior padding, and the chin strap. Opening Bid $500.
