After a long and productive career as a first baseman, Joe Kuhel finished out his days in uniform as the manager of the Washington Senators. From Kuhel’s final MLB season, comes this 1949 game-worn Senators jersey. It was no fault of Kuhel’s, that the Senators finished dead last that year, as both power and capable starting pitching were in short supply. Constructed in wool, this flannel jersey is branded with a Senators “W” patch on the left breast, and Kuhel’s number “40” is seen on the back. Labeling inside the collar includes a Spalding factory tag, cleaning instructions, and the size “42”. The name “Joe Kuhel” is stitched on the front-left tail, along with the erroneous season identification “50”, and the number “42” is stamped below. The accompanying letter of authenticity concludes the date error was simply a seamstress mistake, and that 1949 was the final season for this jersey style, with the team switching to zippered jerseys in 1950. Also noted in the LOA, are a partially broken top button which is still capable of performing its intended fastening function, and the unusual length of the sleeves, which are long enough to hang down well past the elbows. This 3/4-length sleeve style was in favor with managers of the period, including Kuhel. Other than the broken button, and light to moderate sweat staining, this vintage garment reports in very attractive condition, with great fabric integrity. LOA from Phil Wood.
