Despite a respectable 207-126 career record, and four World Series rings to his credit, submarine-style pitcher Carl Mays is best remembered for the tragic beaning death of Ray Chapman on 8/16/1920. This unfortunate news maker is seen here in a 1922 Culver Service 4x6 Type I photo, taken by renowned photographer George Grantham Bain. Belying its antique status, this ancient sepia-tone Mays photo presents remarkably well in (Nm) condition, with excellent gloss, sharp corners, and a clean surface. The reverse bears credit stamps for both Bain and Culver, along with a Culver label, and the identification "Mays pitcher for Yankees, Sept. 26, 1922". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
