Graded VG-EX 4 by SGC. Since the dawn of our national pastime, superstitions and the quest to gain a competitive edge through them has been alive and well. In recent times, chants and slogans are used by fans while players often rely on odd routines and other idiosyncrasies to create an advantage. In the nineteenth century, ballclubs often used young boys as their charms of choice. Such is the case of this breathtaking 1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet #149-11 picturing New York Giants Hall of Famer Buck Ewing and team mascot Willie Breslin. This awe-inspiring period representation is at once unusual and outstanding is display appeal. Both subjects are perfectly captured by the camera's eye in an early studio setting. This oversized 4-1/4 x 6-1/2" premium has survived the past 135 years in exquisite condition with only mild corner/edge wear. It should be noted that an earlier owner chose to clean the front of this card using distilled water to remove a layer of dirt that had accumulated over the years. Additionally, light pencil notations, common to blank-back cards of this era, were erased from the reverse. Only 3 total copies of this intriguing artifact have been judged by the grading service. Opening Bid $1,500.
