Canton Bulldogs manager/owner Jack Cusack's greatest claim to fame was that he brought Jim Thorpe into the NFL. Thorpe's fellow Hall of Famer Earl "Greasy" Neale also played under Cusack, and according to this letter, the two met up later in life and recalled their glory years. Of particular note, they discussed how Neale had used the pseudonym "Foster"! Cusack also predicted Neale's imminent 1969 Hall of Fame induction. Interestingly, these gridiron pioneers were born a year apart in 1890-91 and died the same year in 1973. Dated 9/26/67 on Cusack's 8-1/2" x 11" personal stationery, the missive carries his blue-ink "8-9" signature with a handwritten, initialed postscript, "Pete Donohue the Cincinnati pitcher sends his greetings. He's a great booster of yours. J.P.C." Condition is EX with mailing folds.

In part, the content reads, "Dear Earle: Before digressing on our memory contest let me say I enjoyed every minute of our visit while at Canton...You played but one year for me and that was 1917 as you correctly stated. You caught twice as many forward passes that year than Soucy did the year he played. You did play under the name of 'Foster.' The following quote from the writeup of Canton-Panhandle game. "As a snatcher of the forward pass this Foster who is not known by that name in the record books, has but few equals...Foster was the shining light on the receiving line"...You did not sit on the bench on any game. When I made the remark that you did I had in mind the 1916 season in which Conley and Wilkinson did not play as no substitutions were made. I was in error thinking you played that year. The fact that Calac played that year led to my confusion. I bow to your memory in contrast to mine. Your contribution to Pro-Football over a period of years gives me a feeling that you will be installed this coming year, in fact it should have several years ago. In this connection your name has my unqualified support."
