The aptly named Journey Into Mystery comic book anthology series had its beginning in 1952 under the Atlas Comics banner. Seeking to ride the wave of popular sci-fi movies running rampant across drive-in theaters of the day, this series switched format to focus on giant monsters in the late '50s and early '60s, before settling on super-heroes starting with the first appearance of the Mighty Thor in issue #83. On the way, the publisher brand was re-christened the Marvel Comics Group in 1961. In 1966 the series was changed from an anthology style series with multiple stories per issue, to a single character, single story format under the new title "Thor" in 1966 with issue #126.
