Long before Tom Brady was even born in 1977, his Patriots team played for ten seasons in the American Football League from 1960-1969. For the franchise's entire AFL tenure, they were known as the Boston Patriots. After being absorbed into the NFL in the 1970 merger, the franchise proposed a name change to the "Bay State Patriots" but was shot down by the NFL league office, settling instead for the geographically encompassing name the "New England Patriots".
