Take the collecting superhighway to "Raresville" and get off at exit 1888 for this seldom seen 19th Century checklist. Inserted in packs of 1888 Goodwin & Co. Old Judge Cigarettes, this scarce brochure details a "Cabinet Photograph" redemption offer. As best we can tell, the last time one of these checklists surfaced was more than a decade ago, so we're going out on limb to call this ancient treasure rare. Measuring approximately 1-3/8 x 2-3/8" when folded, this piece unfolds to a width of 9-5/8" with seven pages of printed content. The first page is titled "Base Ball Season of 1888, Revised Edition No. 1" and relates an offer for a cabinet card of a baseball player of your choice in exchange for remitting 25 "Slips" (coupons). The other six pages list 404 players to choose from, with 146 from the 8 National League teams in existence at the time, 129 from the 8 American Association teams, 128 from 8 of the 10 Western Association teams of the day and curiously, just 1 player from a Central League team "Joe Gerhardt of the Jersey City Skeeters". Some of the great players listed are Cap Anson, Hugh Duffy, Pud Galvin, Tim Keefe, Buck Ewing, John Montgomery Ward, Harry Wright, Kid Gleason, King Kelly, Old Hoss Radbourn, Dan Brouthers, Deacon White, Ned Hanlon, Billy Hamilton, Charlie Comiskey and Connie Mack. The perfect complement to an Old Judge baseball tobacco card collection, this important checklist presents pleasing (VG) condition quality, with distinct lettering.
