As the 1904 Major League campaign neared its end, the pennant races were polar opposites with the American League's Boston Americans and New York Highlanders swapping sole possession of first place no fewer than 12 times down the stretch, while the Senior Circuit had long-since been decided by the runaway New York Giants, winners of a franchise-record 106 games. Enthusiasm stopped there, however, as Giants skipper John McGraw had announced near mid-season that his club would not be participating in any postseason contests with an "inferior" American League team. And so it was, with the remaining scheduled games rendered meaningless by the Giants' thorough dominance and McGraw's staunch opposition of the upstart league and its president, Ban Johnson, the Giants met the defending champion Pirates on September 24 at the Polo Grounds. With nothing to play for, save for supporting McGraw's (justified) claims of superiority, the Giants bested their foes, 3-1 to increase their mark to 101-39 and maintain their insurmountable standings lead at 17-1/2 games. Issued at the historic Harlem venue that afternoon, this program is a rare and glorious survivor celebrating the franchise's best-ever season, its legendary skipper and unrivaled mound ace. The eight-page guide presents (VG) with covers, pages and original spine staples completely intact. There is a small tear on the front cover's right edge, a vertical compacting fold (the latter inherent to almost all stadium-issued publications of this era) and a penciled event notation on the front cover. On the center pages, scoring grids with pre-printed lineups have been marked in graphite pencil to document a 3-1 Giants triumph in which Christy Mathewson fanned six and walked just one. En route to 33 victories, Mathewson helped his own cause with a base hit and run scored (while holding Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner hitless).  As for McGraw's refusal of a World Series showdown, it was his right to do so, as the previous year's "inaugural" Fall Classic had been arranged by the league winners. Major League Baseball didn't mandate World Series participation until the following year. With composite photos of McGraw and Giants infielders Dan McGann and Billy Gilbert on the front cover, this precious stadium artifact is a coveted keepsake from a season of dominance and defiance!
