An innovative executive in baseball, basketball and football, former NFL President Joe Carr garnered most of his recognition and accolades in the latter arena. This typewritten correspondence was composed and signed by Carr (d.1939) prior to the 1933 season, the league’s first with multiple divisions and scheduled postseason play. Dated “March 5, 1933” and typewritten on a crisp 8-1/2 x 11” sheet of “The National Football League” letterhead, the letter has excellent football content regarding Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski. At the conclusion, Carr’s black-ink penning has been Graded 9 by PSA/DNA. Among the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s most fleeting signatures, this is arguably the most potent Carr signature extant. Full photo LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA. More on our website.

The letter is addressed to the “Haskin Information Bureau in Washington, D.C. and reads (in full):

Gentlemen:

Replying to your letter under date of February 24 relative to whether or not Nagurski of Minnesota was named on the All Star team selected by Red Grange. Wanted to get absolutely correct information, hence my delay in answering.

Red Grange only selected two All Star teams of players whom he had opposed during his college and professional career. Later he selected a team, picked from these two groups, in neither one of which Nagurski’s name appeared, inasmuch as he had never opposed Grange on the grid-iron either in college or professionally. Since entering the Professional game they have both been associated with the Chicago Bears. However, Grange advises me he considers Nagurski one of the outstanding players of all time.

A little later on, in keeping with you request, I will send you some additional data you can have on file in the event you have any further queries. However, be assured I am always glad to cooperate with you in every way possible.

Thanking you for your letter, I am

Very truly yours,

(signed) Joe F. Carr
