Written and visual accounts tell us that Lou Gehrig spent a large portion of his career in the sizable shadow of Babe Ruth. Fatally diagnosed after having played in 2,130 consecutive games, Gehrig was replaced by another “Babe,” well-traveled infielder Ellsworth “Babe” Dahlgren. This OAL Brown baseball is autographed by that otherwise obscured first baseman. The clean white orb has mild toning spots and is decorated with Dahlgren’s black ballpoint scripting, which projects (“9”) strength and clarity in its occupancy of the sweet spot. Despite a 12-year career that produced 1,056 hits, Dahlgren will forever be remembered for being penciled into the Yankees lineup on May 2, 1939. Admirably answering the call that afternoon, Dahlgren homered and doubled to help the Yankees to a 22-2 rout of the Tigers. He also homered during the club’s World Series rout of Cincinnati that fall. Full photo LOA from JSA.
